Most people find basements quite icky. The reason? It's because cellars do have the distinction of being the dirtiest part of the house. Basements are the most neglected areas, and most people merely use the same as storage rooms, laundry spaces, and work places. One of the perennial problems associated with basements is the buildup of molds. Molds are not only unsightly, but they can become health hazards as well. Hence, there is a need for solutions to basement mold problems.

Basement mold is an inevitable happening, especially if the basement is left untreated. Basements are often damp and humid. This promotes the development of mold along the cracks and angles, and even the surfaces, of the same. Indeed, it's the moisture that accumulates in the basement that gives birth to molds.

Molds, of course, are fungal colonies that feed on the surfaces they grow on. Though they are known to be more repulsive looking than they are actually harmful, molds do pose a threat to people with allergies and asthma, and they can cause a variety of skin irritations. But some varieties of molds do produce toxins as part of their defense system. This may cause eye irritation, skin rashes and respiratory discomforts.

Most people are of the belief that they need to come in physical contact with basement mold before the same can pose dangers to their health. This is not true. Molds release spores that travel through air. As such, people within the vicinity of such a fungal colony are always in danger of the perils we have described above.

So how do you get rid of basement mold? Here are some suggestions:

* Keep the basement dry as much as possible. This means sealing off areas that produce leakages, using spray-on or roll-on solutions for concrete surfaces to prevent the accumulation of moisture, and drying off carpets that have been left wet.

* Improve air circulation in the basement. You can do this by constructing some windows, if possible, to avoid stagnant air. Or you can invest on an air conditioning unit or a basement dehumidifier for the same purpose. Exhaust fans are also excellent alternatives, and they are more affordable as well.

* Keep your basement clean. Just because it's the least exposed area of your house doesn't mean that it's alright to leave it dirty. Include the basement as part of your spring cleaning schedule.
